Tips for getting files from complex sites

Note: These tips assume that a site is doing everything it can to control how its visitors are able to use it. On most sites, you won't have to use any of these tips.

Choose where to start

If a Web site has clear, well organized navigation, it will load neatly in GetBot's Site window and be easy to download. If the site is a mess of frames, JavaScript, DHTML, and Flash, it may be easier to start GetBot on a gallery page or a contents page instead of the home page of the site. The less standards-compliant a site is, the deeper into it you may have to start GetBot's Site window to use it effectively.

Defeat right-click blocking

To get the address of a page loaded in Internet Explorer, right-click it and choose Properties. What if the page is blocking right-clicks? Use the Site window to break through right-click blocking, or use this tip:

  1. Press the right mouse button, and don't let go. The message box that says something like "don't right-click!" will appear.
  2. Press Enter on your keyboard to clear the message box.
  3. Let go of the right mouse button. The right-click menu will appear! Choose Properties to get the address.

Look in Internet Explorer's cache

Another way to find the addresses of files you've browsed to on the Web is to look at them in Internet Explorer's cache. Here's how:

  1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options.
  2. On the General tab, click Delete Files... and then click OK twice. This will clear the cache so it will be easy to find new files there later.
  3. Browse to the page that won't tell you its address. Internet Explorer will save the files it downloads in the cache.
  4. Click Tools, Internet Options again. This time, click Settings..., then View Files.... Internet Explorer will open the Temporary Internet Files folder on your hard drive. Click the Internet Address column to sort by it, and scroll to find files from the site you are browsing. Right-click a file and choose Properties, and you've got its address.

With a file's address, GetBot can download it. Put a page's address into a GetBot Site window to get its contents.
